Overview

South Keys–Hunt Club is a residential and commercial area in Ottawa's south end, named for the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, established in the area in 1907. Residential development began in earnest in the early 1970s, and the area today combines 1970s-80s subdivisions with the South Keys Shopping Centre, which opened in 1996 and anchors the neighbourhood's retail core.

Boundaries

The City of Ottawa Neighbourhood Study covers this area with seven separate boundaries, merged here into a single shape spanning much of Ottawa's south end between the Rideau River and the Ottawa International Airport, along the Hunt Club Road and Bank Street corridors.

History

The Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, which gave the neighbourhood its name, existed as a hunting and equestrian club by 1876 and bought its current site in 1907. An 18-hole golf course, designed in part by two-time British Open champion Willie Park Jr., opened in 1922, with the club later adding a curling rink and further renovations through the 20th and 21st centuries.

Residential development of South Keys–Hunt Club began in earnest in the early 1970s, with many homes built through the 1970s and 1980s and newer construction later in the Sawmill Creek area. Hunt Club Road and many local businesses took their names from the golf club.

South Keys Shopping Centre opened in 1996, built on 56 acres with 486,127 square feet of retail space across eight buildings, anchored by Walmart.

South Keys Station opened for Transitway bus service on September 2, 1995, and gained O-Train platforms in 2025, becoming the transfer hub connecting the Trillium Line (Line 2) to the new Airport Link (Line 4) serving Ottawa International Airport.

South Keys–Hunt Club's defining feature is its role as a major south-end transit and retail hub, anchored by South Keys Shopping Centre and South Keys Station, now the connection point between the O-Train Trillium Line and the direct rail link to Ottawa International Airport.

Alta Vista and Elmvale Acres lie north, Riverside South and Findlay Creek lie south, the Rideau River and Old Ottawa South lie west, and Ottawa International Airport lies southeast.

Architecture

Hunt Club's residential streets carry single-family homes built mainly in the 1970s and 1980s, with newer construction in the Sawmill Creek area. South Keys' commercial core is dominated by the low-rise big-box retail architecture typical of its 1996 shopping centre development.
