Overview

Sandy Hill sits just east of downtown between the Rideau Canal and the Rideau River, and was Ottawa's wealthiest neighbourhood through the 19th and 20th centuries, home to prime ministers and much of the city's elite. It remains home to many foreign embassies and official residences, to Laurier House, and to most of the University of Ottawa campus, alongside a busy Rideau Street commercial strip with a strong concentration of Indian restaurants.

Boundaries

The Ottawa Neighbourhood Study boundary runs along the Rideau Canal to the west, the Rideau River to the north and east, and the Queensway (Highway 417) area to the south, covering Rideau Street, the Sandy Hill West and Wilbrod-Laurier heritage conservation districts, and most of the University of Ottawa campus.

History

Sandy Hill takes its name from the hilly, sandy terrain that once discouraged large buildings on the site. Through the 19th and early 20th centuries it was Ottawa's wealthiest neighbourhood, home to prime ministers, senior civil servants and the city's business elite, who built substantial homes on streets such as Daly Avenue and Wilbrod Street.

Laurier House, on Laurier Avenue East, was the residence of two Canadian prime ministers: Sir Wilfrid Laurier, and later William Lyon Mackenzie King, who renamed the home in his mentor's honour in 1923. It is now a National Historic Site and museum operated by Parks Canada.

As Ottawa's government and diplomatic presence grew through the 20th century, Sandy Hill and neighbouring Lowertown became a favoured location for foreign embassies and official residences, an area often referred to informally as Embassy Row.

The University of Ottawa expanded its campus into the western part of the neighbourhood through the 20th century, bringing a large student population to Sandy Hill alongside its long-established residential streets; the Sandy Hill West and Wilbrod-Laurier Heritage Conservation Districts now protect much of the neighbourhood's 19th- and early-20th-century housing stock.

Sandy Hill's defining feature is the contrast between its heritage streets of grand 19th-century homes — once home to prime ministers and now largely protected as heritage conservation districts — and its role today as the heart of the University of Ottawa campus and one of the city's most diverse commercial strips along Rideau Street.

Surrounding Neighbourhoods

The ByWard Market and Lowertown lie north and northwest across the Rideau Canal area, Centretown and the Golden Triangle are west across the canal, Old Ottawa East is south across the Queensway, and Vanier is east across the Rideau River.

Architecture

Sandy Hill's western streets — Daly Avenue, Wilbrod Street, Stewart Street and Cumberland Street among them — retain grand Victorian and Edwardian homes from the neighbourhood's era as Ottawa's wealthiest district, protected today through the Sandy Hill West and Wilbrod-Laurier Heritage Conservation Districts. Rideau Street carries a denser mix of low- and mid-rise commercial buildings, and the University of Ottawa campus occupies much of the neighbourhood's western third with institutional and student-residence architecture from multiple eras.

Pedestrian and Cycling

Sandy Hill is flat and walkable, bordered by pathways along both the Rideau Canal to the west and the Rideau River to the north and east, with the University of Ottawa campus knitting the western part of the neighbourhood together.
