Overview

Meadowlands–Fisher Glen is a residential area in west-central Ottawa combining the former Nepean communities of City View, Crestview and Meadowlands with Borden Farm and Fisher Glen, centred on the Merivale Road commercial corridor. City View developed from the 1930s onward as one of Nepean's earliest suburbs, while Borden Farm and Fisher Glen were built out through the 1960s to 1980s on former farmland.

Boundaries

The City of Ottawa Neighbourhood Study covers this area with two separate boundaries, merged here: Cityview-Crestview-Meadowlands to the west of Merivale Road, and Borden Farm-Fisher Glen further south and east, together running roughly from Baseline Road south to the Fisher Glen area near Chesterton Drive.

History

City View developed from the 1930s through the 1960s on a grid street pattern and functioned as its own police village from 1954 to 1974, with much of its housing built by Minto Construction.

Crestview was built up mainly in the 1950s and 1960s with bungalows, followed later by townhouses and condominiums; Viewmount Drive was extended to Fisher Avenue in the early 1980s to enable the development of Fisher Glen.

Borden Farm takes its name from the former Borden Dairy Farm; the land was purchased by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation in 1959 and developed from 1967 to 1976 as a joint CMHC/Ontario Housing Corporation project, with parks and bikeways deliberately routed behind houses rather than along streets.

All of these communities were part of the former City/Township of Nepean until Ottawa's 2001 amalgamation. The Merivale Road corridor running through the area has since become a focus of the city's Baseline-Merivale Secondary Plan, a growth and intensification planning process launched in 2025.

Claim to Fame

Meadowlands–Fisher Glen's defining feature is the Merivale Road commercial corridor running through it, anchored by Merivale Mall, which has served the surrounding City View, Crestview, Meadowlands, Borden Farm and Fisher Glen communities since 1976.

Carlington and Carlingwood lie north, Centrepointe-Craig Henry lies west, Hunt Club lies south, and Old Ottawa South lies east across the Rideau River.

Architecture

City View's 1930s-60s housing follows an early grid street pattern, while Crestview mixes 1950s-60s bungalows with later townhouses and condominiums. Borden Farm's 1967-76 CMHC/Ontario Housing Corporation development placed parks and bikeways behind houses rather than facing the street, a design distinct from typical postwar subdivisions.

Borden Farm's original design routes pathways and bikeways behind houses rather than along streets, and the area includes several neighbourhood parks. Merivale Road itself is a busy commercial arterial oriented more toward driving and bus service.

Transit Options

OC Transpo bus routes run along Merivale Road, Baseline Road and Fisher Avenue. The area does not have its own O-Train station. Check octranspo.com for current route numbers, since the network is periodically redesigned.
